9/11/2023 0 Comments Chicago union station metra![]() In a decision reached Monday and released today, the STB ruled on costs in three areas - ground-power charges, station operations and maintenance, and policing - after Amtrak and Metra had previously agreed on costs for dispatching and maintenance-of-way. WASHINGTON - The Surface Transportation board has ruled Metra must pay Amtrak $10.7 million annually for use of Chicago Union Station - virtually splitting the difference between the figures suggested by the two parities - while declining to address a number of key operating issues which remain in dispute. A lot rests on their shoulders, from the preservation of an historic and iconic structure to the long-term vitality of Chicago’s office market. The Surface Transportation Board has ruled on the dispute between Amtrak and Metra over the commuter railroad’s fees to use Chicago Union Station. Without expanded capacity on the transit network that a revamped Union Station would provide, Chicago’s ability to remain attractive to new corporations is at risk.Īmtrak will make a selection of their Master Developer some time before the end of the year. Combined, the Chicago Transit Authority and Metra carry half of the city's downtown workers every day. Recent census data show us that Chicago may owe its stability in large part to the new workers that are attracted to a transit commute to their loop based headquarters. With the completion of the planned redevelopment of Chicago Union Station hopefully in the near future, we can anticipate such vitality 52 weeks of the year. The Metropolitan Planning Council (MPC) borrowed inspiration from Philadelphia for our Activate Union Station Challenge that brought visitors during one week in August 2013. Washington D.C.’s station is famously visited by more shoppers than train riders each year-yet it still serves as a critical transportation hub for the city. Not only would Amtrak generate revenue from this activity, but the additional people the development would bring would add life and vitality to this corner of the loop-an important benefit in and of itself.Ĭities across the country are taking advantage of their rail stations to do more than just move people. The recently released request to master developers offers construction on the head house and an additional two sites immediately south and southeast for future development. By completing the original vision, Amtrak can add people and value to the station, along with much needed revenue to finance capacity improvements. When designed by Burnham, the iconic head house was intended to accommodate an additional 14 floors which were never constructed. Ironically, the best way to preserve the building is to change it. While no one wants to see the landmark-eligible structure marred in any way, its redevelopment is essential to the long-term health and vitality of Chicago’s central business district. The success of Union Station is also its greatest challenge the strain of daily travelers has taken its toll and has stretched the capacity of the station to its limits. Today, this Daniel Burnham-designed building attracts more than 33 million Amtrak and Metra riders per year, far more than was contemplated when it opened on May 20, 1925. Ninety-one years after Chicago Union Station opened for service, Amtrak issued a request for developers to form the station’s next century. Today, Amtrak is seeking a developer to make good on that vision. Union Station was designed to accommodate an additional 14 stories.

There is one more window behind the driver’s seat that is protected by reinforced wire mesh to protect it if the winch cable breaks and snaps back. The door on the left and the right wall of the cab each have single opening windows. The central window is the largest and is fitted with a powered wiper. There are a total of five windows at the front of the cab. The operator gains access via a door on the left side of the cab. The vehicle is unarmed, but there is a bracket in the cab for the operator to store his personal weapon. This was purposely designed so regular infantrymen would find it easy to control and operate the vehicle without needing to be a specialized vehicle operator. Inside the air-conditioned cab, a steering wheel and foot pedals, much like a military truck, can be found. The M105 is far easier to control than previous dozers operated by the military. Note the 5 windows on the cab, the running board/fender that runs the length of the vehicle, and the cutouts under the cab for the dozer blade’s pistons. This photo shows the front and cab of the M105 DEUCE. DEUCEs of Engineer Troop, 2nd Cavalry Regiment at the Grafenwöhr Training Area in August 2009. Aside from what may be ballistic glass on the cab (at the time of writing, it is unclear whether it is standard safety or ballistic glass), the DEUCE is completely unarmored. Due to its intended use, the M9 was at least partially armored. The DEUCE was intended for behind-the-lines work, such as flattening ground for roads or clearing areas for building construction. Whereas the M9 ACE was designed to operate in combat conditions, the M105 was not. It can also be air-dropped via parachute from a C-130. The DEUCE is air deployable and can be carried by C-130 Hercules, C-141 Starlifter, C-5 Galaxy or C-17 Globemaster cargo aircraft. The dozer’s blade is located underneath the cab, with the engine and running gear towards the rear. The DEUCE is a one-man vehicle, operated from a cab at the front of the dozer. This is heavier than the larger M9, but this is mostly due to the fact that the M9 was largely hollow. The vehicle is extremely compact in its design at 19 feet 3 inches (5.8 meters) long, 9 feet 7 inches (2.9 meters) wide, and 9 feet 1 inch (2.7 meters) high. The DEUCE didn’t change much from its 30/30 EST dozer origins. Photo: Caterpillar Chronicle: History of the Greatest Earthmovers Design The prototype 30/30 Engineer Support Tractor (EST). A small number have also served with the British Army. Approximately 227 M105 have been produced and are currently in service with the United States Military. The vehicles finally entered service in 1999. Caterpillar were then granted a contract for construction, with the dozers costing $362,687 each. This design was agreed upon and it was serialized as the M105. In 1996, Caterpillar came back with a revised design. As such, just one 30/30 prototype was built. This vehicle was expensive, however, and due to budget cutbacks of prospective buyers, Caterpillar never received an order. The ‘30/30’ designation came from a 30 mph top speed, and a total weight of 30,000 pounds. This initial vehicle was known as the 30/30 Engineer Support Tractor. Development of what would become the M105 started in late 1995. This high-mobility dozer emerged from the partnership between the Tank-Automotive and Armaments Command (TACOM) of Warren, Michigan, and the Defense and Federal Products department of the construction industry giant, Caterpillar Inc, based in Mossville, Illinois. The Deployable Universal Combat Earthmover M105, otherwise known as the ‘DEUCE’. It can be deployed alongside airborne troops and is fast enough to re-deploy from task-to-task without the need of a separate transporter vehicle. ![]() The M105 is a much lighter vehicle than the other two vehicles and it is air-transportable, self-deployable (meaning it can be driven to where it is needed) and air-droppable. The M105 was brought into existence to replace the veteran Caterpillar D5 Bulldozer and, to a lesser extent, supplement the somewhat loathed M9 Armored Combat Earthmover (ACE). The Deployable Universal Combat Earthmover M105, otherwise known as the ‘DEUCE’, was born out of this need. As well as armed and armored vehicles, this need also translated to engineering vehicles. Put simply, this was the ability to be deployed wherever needed, in the shortest time possible, often relying on airborne deployments. In the mid-1990s, the prevailing trend for vehicles in the United States Army was for them to be capable of ‘Rapid Reaction’. I will buy it to complement my collection even though I believe modeling technology can't come close the quality of a good sample bank like Sampletek. It's a better solution than a digital piano. Its main advantage is the very low price for a decent sound quality. It could sound more natural and expressive (like Pianoteq) and it seems there will not be a Mac version available anytime soon. It's probably the worst from all three (TruePianos, Pianoteq and Pianissimo) but it's good and authentic enough for solo piano tracks (it might be comparable to TruePianos). It's a pity that it only provides one sound (with a few variations) and that the presets have a very annoying reverb. You'll need plenty of space available in your hard disk (less than with Truepianos and Pianoteq but more than with several giga sample banks) and the sound is pretty decent. (Originally written by Ehma2Retour/translated from Audiofanzine FR) In the end I agree with the previous opinion by giving the same note and agreeing at the price it costs this app is a real business that can give more satisfaction than a digital piano. ![]() It also has the good taste not to produce sound when you pushed a button slowly, like on a real acoustic piano (something do not do the Garritan Steinway, which is still a reference for my piano recording.) While the sound may be worse than the other three, perhaps less "end".īut it gives the fingers feel like dealing with a piano, especially in the media who are really poor parents of the numerical simulation. I can also compare it to the Garritan Steinway is superior in sound quality, very playable but can seem a bit "soft" live.īy Pianissimo against satisfies me for the feeling of realism it gives me. The setting options are excellent but in the end my ears can not find the sound credible. When I try I find the True Piano sound pretty good but I closer to the sound of a digital piano as an acoustic piano. Not that the previous opinion is wrong but it shows that we all have a very different perception of piano sounds and digital software.įor my part Pianissimo is the best compromise realism / playability of other apps mentioned by Ehma namely Pianoteq piano and True. I post a review Pianissimo because it is contrary to previous opinion. Pianissimo virtual piano is a must have more anyone putting together a virtual suite of instruments. It's definitely worth it if you're going to be using a virtual piano a lot, as in my opinion you're getting the closest thing to a real piano in the digital world. The price is definitely reasonable, as it isn't too expensive but also isn't dirt cheap. However, this isn't always something that is possible, so when it's not Ivory would definitely be my first choice for a virtual piano. ![]() I'm usually not opposed to using this on recordings of all types, but in general I do like to use a real piano when possible. It's definitely the most realistic sounding virtual piano that I've heard, as I really can't think of another that I like more. Beyond the control, which would is too in depth to go into detail here, the sounds are some of the best that I've heard when it comes to digital piano modeling. The amount of control over the different pianos is really outstanding, as you have absolute complete control over what you're end result is. For example, there are piano sounds modeled after Yamaha, Steinway, and many other famous piano brands. The interface of the software offers up a whole lot of control over your sound, with a ton of different preset starting points that model all sorts of different acoustic pianos. Since I don't own this software myself, I wasn't involved with the installation process and can't really speak about it.
